Can You Play American Mahjong With Three Players?

One empty chair does not have to cancel the game.

Yes — you can play with three. Use all 152 tiles, build four walls, and skip the Charleston. The empty chair gets no hand.

This is the NMJL-style three-player method. If you have played with a dummy hand for passing before, that is a separate house-rule version.

Four walls, three hands

Three-player American Mahjong table with four walls and one empty seat
Keep all four walls in play, deal only three hands, and skip the empty seat during turns.

Use the same playing inventory as the four-player game: 152 tiles, including eight flowers and eight jokers. Build four walls of 19 stacks, two tiles high, even though one seat is empty.

Leave the empty seat’s undealt tiles in the wall. They will be drawn during play, just like the rest.

Use the same edition of the NMJL card. The winning hands do not change when there are three players.

The last few tiles of the deal

Choose East and break the wall with the dice as usual. Moving to the right among the occupied seats, each player takes four tiles at a time for three rounds. All three players now have 12.

For the final step, East takes the next two tiles, then each other player takes one. East finishes with 14 and the other two players with 13. This procedure reflects the League’s January 2024 clarification reported in Tom Sloper’s three-player guide.

If you learned to have everyone take one more tile before East takes another, you may be remembering an older procedure. Agree to use the updated dealing order before you begin.

From the first discard onward

Check the tile counts, then East discards. There is no Charleston in this version.

Some groups prefer to add a dummy hand so they can still pass tiles. That is a house rule, and everyone needs to agree on how the passes will work.

Treat an added courtesy exchange the same way: agree on it as a house rule before dealing.

East discards one tile to begin. The next occupied seat to the right takes the next turn unless a legal call interrupts. Skip the empty seat; nobody draws or discards on its behalf.

Keep using the walls in their normal clockwise sequence. The wall at the empty seat is served when its position comes around, not removed or saved as a separate reserve.

A winning hand still needs 14 tiles that match the card. The same joker and calling rules apply as in four-player games.

Agree on the version before you start

If your group learned different three-player versions, sort that out before the deal. Confirm whether you are skipping the Charleston or using an agreed passing variation.

Without the Charleston, you choose your opening direction from the tiles you were dealt. Give yourself time to look through the card before East’s first discard.

Quick answers

Should the empty seat receive 13 tiles?

No. Build its wall, but do not deal it a hand.

Do we remove any numbered suits?

No. This American method uses all 152 playing tiles. Rules for other three-player mahjong variants should not be imported into it.

Can our group use a three-person Charleston?

You can agree to a house-rule variant, but it is separate from the no-Charleston method in this guide. Decide all passing details before starting.
