American Mahjong Joker Rules: Uses, Limits and Exchanges

Where a joker can help—and what to do when you have the tile needed to exchange one.

Two 8 dots and a joker can make a pung. One 8 dot and a joker cannot make a pair. That gap is why a hand full of jokers can still be stuck waiting for a single tile.

Under NMJL rules, jokers belong in matching groups of three or more. The examples here show those groups on their own; your finished hand still needs to match a line on the card.

Where jokers are allowed

American Mahjong groups that may and may not contain jokers
Jokers work in matching groups of three or more; singles, pairs, NEWS, and year digits require natural tiles.

Jokers may be used in a pung of three identical tiles, a kong of four, a quint of five, or a sextet of six, as required by the card. They may not replace a single tile or either tile of a pair.

Is the joker placement legal?
Example Answer
Two 8 dots plus a joker, for a pung of 8 dots Yes, within a hand that requires that pung
One 8 dot plus a joker, for a pair of 8 dots No
N, E, W, and a joker standing for S No; NEWS is four singles
A joker inside a printed year grouping No

A pung of flowers can include a joker because flowers count as the same tile type. A pair of flowers cannot. The year grouping prints four digits close together, but they are four singles, not a kong. Jokers are never allowed in singles.

How to exchange a joker

Three steps for exchanging an exposed joker in American Mahjong
Acquire a tile, trade the exact natural tile for the exposed joker, then discard.

Look at the tiles beside the exposed joker. If they are green dragons, you need a green dragon to exchange for it. A red dragon or soap will not work.

Exchange during your own turn, after you have acquired a tile and before you discard. You can exchange from your own valid exposure as well as someone else’s. Since you give one tile and receive one, your count stays the same.

  1. On an ordinary turn, draw from the proper end of the wall.
  2. Identify the exposure and offer the exact replacement tile.
  3. For another player’s rack, request the exchange and complete it hand-to-hand over the table.
  4. Place the redeemed joker in your hand, then discard unless you can declare a valid win.

You can rack your drawn tile first, or use it directly for the exchange. Either way, you must acquire a tile for your turn before exchanging.

Calling a tile before exchanging

A legal call can also begin your turn. In that case, first take the discard and complete its required exposure using the tiles already available to you. You may then make a separate joker exchange before discarding.

You cannot call a tile for an incomplete quint, expose only four tiles, and redeem a joker to supply the fifth. The called tile must complete the required exposure when you make it.

Once you initiate a joker exchange, you can no longer change the exposure you just made. This applies even before you discard, as the League clarified in its 2026 bulletin. See questions 2 and 4.

Three moves you cannot make

  • Passing a joker: Jokers cannot be passed in the Charleston or courtesy exchange.
  • Calling a discarded joker: It cannot be claimed, even to complete mahjong.
  • Calling a tile just to exchange it: A discarded natural tile cannot be taken solely because it would redeem an exposed joker. It must independently qualify for a legal call.

Once an exposure has been fixed, a later legal joker redemption replaces the joker with its natural tile; it does not change the exposure’s size or identity.

Jokers in concealed hands

A concealed hand may contain jokers in its eligible matching groups. It may also benefit from a legal redemption because exchanging for a joker does not require you to expose your own hand.

One scoring exception is easy to miss: Singles & Pairs hands do not earn the jokerless bonus. Their printed values already account for being made without jokers.

If a hand has been declared dead, check which jokers remain available before exchanging. That depends on the exposures and the reason the hand was disqualified.

Quick answers

Can a concealed hand contain a joker?

Yes, in its permitted matching groups of three or more. Concealed does not mean jokerless.

May I exchange before drawing?

No. First acquire the tile for your turn, either by drawing or through a legal call and completed exposure.

Can I redeem a joker with a different dragon?

No. Use the exact natural tile represented by the joker, not just any tile from the same family.
